A deep dive with Uy, CIO at Accel.
What do you ACTUALLY do?
Now that I’m in venture capital, friends and family ask me this question all the time. First and foremost, I am not on the investment team. I haven’t reached that liquidity level. However, my job does have 3 unique components:
- Oversee an incredible team that handles our corporate IT
- Participate in due diligence
- Advise IT strategy with portfolio companies
What types of devices do you support?
If it requires power, we’ll support it!
What’s your favorite piece of tech?
What tools or apps are most important to your job?
- #allthingsapple – MacBook Pro, Apple Watch, iPhoneX
- Slack – if you need me, #slack me
- Chrome – Every app should be browser friendly
Do you prefer hands-on, or troubleshooting from afar?
The more human interaction, the better. Less gets lost in translation.
Favorite thing about your IT environment?
I love that we over-index on user happiness. Cost is always a factor but isn’t the only one.
Thing you’d most like to change about it?
We have offices in both the UK and India. We’re working towards a unified IT roadmap.
What’s on your desk?
What was your proudest professional moment?
Becoming a finalist for CIO of the year in the Bay Area.
Most cringe worthy request?
Whenever someone asks me to help, I don’t like sitting in warm chairs or touching keyboards with crumbs.
Do you stay hydrated at work?
Of course – Blue Bottle and Fiji all day!
CLI or GUI?
DIY or turnkey?
I’ll gladly pay for anything that has an incredible UI and UX.
